Our scientists cannot openly speak to the press.  Laws that would drastically weaken environmental regulations, while also silencing “land owners, First Nations, taxpayers, scientists, charities and others who wish to defend the environment” (DSF), are being buried in a massive budget bill.  Environmental groups are being accused of criminal activity and having their charitable status threatened.

But now, the environmental groups are fighting back with the BlackOutSpeakOut campaign.  On June 4th, 2012, the websites of David Suzuki Foundation, Greenpeace Canada, Environmental Defence, Equiterre, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Sierra Club of Canada, Pembina Institute, Nature Canada, Ecojustice and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada, will be blacked out in protest of the concerted efforts by Canada’s federal government to erode environmental regulations and democracy.  Specifically, the campaign was created to encourage Canadians to speak out against Bill C-38, the omnibus budget bill mentioned above.

There are a variety of ways in which you can get involved in this campaign:

  • Visit the BlackOutSpeakOut website.
  • “Like” and “Share” the Black Out Speak Out updates on the Facebook pages of the environmental groups listed above.
  • If you are on Twitter, include the Hashtag #BlackOutSpeakOut on all your tweets.
  • If you can, make a donation to an environmental group.  They need all the help we can give them.
  • On June 4th, blackout your website. (Anyone know if this can be done to a blog on WordPress?)

But most importantly, learn for yourself about bill C-38.  If you oppose the gutting of environmental regulations; if you oppose the fact that such changes to environmental regulations are being “hidden” in a budget bill rather than being debated separately; and if you oppose the fact the the Conservative government has passed a motion limiting debate to Bill C-38, please get involved  and speak out against this attack on environmental regulations.  Talk your friends about it.  Share your opinion with your local MP.  Send letters to the media.

The Conservative government is waging a “war on nature and democracy” (Sierra Club Canada).  It’s time for us to fight back.
