Rick Mercer: PMO Pest Control

2012/03/03

When our current Federal Government isn’t trying to eliminate Environment Canada (or at least render is useless), it is busy muzzling it’s own scientists and controlling what Canadians hear about the research that their tax dollars are paying for.  The goal is to make sure that what Canadians (and people around the world) hear is in line with government policy.

In other words, while Canadian public policy should be based on scientific information, scientific information is actually based on Conservative public policy.

While I am tempted to go on about how such “anti-science” governance is horrible for our democracy and our environment, I will instead turn to comedian Rick Mercer.  During his latest episode of The Rick Mercer Report (which you can watch on CBC.ca), Mr. Mercer did what he does best: make fun of public policy through laughter.  Please take a look at the video below.

Whatever you do, do not mention DDT or, God help you, John Kosowski will come down on you like a tonne of bricks… My advice would be to stick to talking about “…expensive, high-tech, highly-toxic if not carcinogenic, organic pesticides and hebicides that require repeated application, promote acquired immunity, and do not work as well as natural control mechanisms”… That should prevent him from hijacking any discussion with his attempts to re-write history and paint Rachel Carson as having been worse than all the evil tyrants in recorded history combined.

Thanks for the advice. I did a paper on said organic compound in third year of university. Nasty stuff!

Maybe you’re lucky and he hasn’t bothered you (but you can’t guarantee he won’t come visiting one day). Actually, that leads to an interesting question: Why did he plague my site for 5 weeks but never visit any of those of other commenters on it…?

Maybe he enjoys the mental challenge of a good debate : )

Please keep the conversation going by leaving a comment. Write what you think, but keep it respectful. Thanks!
