To the Last Drop: Canada’s Dirty Oil Sands

This used to be a forest.
On Monday, I came across a video on YouTube that I would like to share with all of you. It is a gut-wrenching documentary put together by Niobe Thompson and Tom Radford of Al Jazeera English titled To the Last Drop: Canada’s Dirty Oil Sands. The documentary was first released in 2010. However, considering the current talks about planed pipelines heading east, west and south from Northern Alberta, I believe it is worth reminding ourselves of how destructive the Alberta Tar Sands truly are.
The documentary focuses its attention on the small Town of Forth Chipewyan, which is downstream form the Tar Sands mines. Citizens in the town are looking for answers as friends and family are dying of cancer at unusually high rates. This is a classic case of David vs. Goliath. Playing the part of “David” are the scientist and doctors making the connection between the cancers and pollution form the Tar Sands projects. Playing “Goliath” are the governments of Canada and Alberta, looking to expand production at all costs.
Below, I’ve embedded the two-part documentary. Total running time is about 47 minutes.
